Review: The Art of Being Normal – Lisa Willamson

My word, I just came on to review another book and realised I had forgotten to review this one. I will, however, pull from a mini-review I did elsewhere. In short, this is magnificent and important.

Two boys. Two secrets. When he was younger, David’s class were asked to write what they wanted to be when they grew up. Some wanted to be Harry Potter, or have set professions – he wanted to be a girl.

The Art of Being Normal explores gender identity in high school. From the supportive close friends to being unable to tell others and the name he inherited from that class activity years back, it follows the good and bad of David’s life. You know when you finish a book and think, ‘This is important’? That’s what happens when reading this. On top of being well written and all the things that make a good book, this is important YA.
