Book Festival: IDP2043: ‘The future isn’t what it used to be’

Last year the Edinburgh International Book Festival hosted Stripped, a segment dedicated to graphic novels. This year, they’ve tried something a little different by commissioning their own: IDP2043. Writers and artists have collaborated on six chapters of one narrative – the water levels have risen, and they want to look at how society would reform in catastrophe.

The first of two of the Internally Displaced People events begins with Pat Mills talking about discovering characters in real life. “You come across people who are weird, strange and over the top. I love discovering characters.” Some of those he’d stockpiled fitted into IDP naturally.

“It was certainly the first time I’ve illustrated a long form comic collaboration,” adds Hannah Berry, who was paired with Pat. “It worked out alright. You know [Pat’s] got high standards.”
