BACK IN BLACK
PAPA ROACH RETURN TO THEIR ROOTS AND TACKLE THEIR DEMONS ON FORTHCOMING SEVENTH ALBUM

HOW IS THE RECORD SOUNDING NOW THAT YOU’RE FINALLY ABLE TO BEGIN DIGESTING IT?
Says vocalist Jacoby Shaddix: “It’s sounding pretty good right now. We bouht a recording studio in our home town a while back, so this was the first time we’ve written and recorded a record in Sacramento since before ‘Infest’. It’s been really cool to come back home and see a lot of our old friends.”

HAS THAT SENSE OF LOCAL FAMILIARITY MADE FOR A MORE OLD-SCHOOL PAPA ROACH RECORD?
“Maybe to an extent. Out last record was kind of a straight ahead, rock ‘n’ roll, incarnation of Papa Roach, but this time there’s more of a groove element. We went back and started listening to bands like Rage Against The Machine and The Prodigy which has really influenced the way we approached things.”

HOW HAS THE MAKING OF THIS RECORD BEEN IN COMPARISON TO PREVIOUS RECORDS?
“It’s been up and down. I’ve been going through some really painful shit recently and I’ve put all of that into the music. There was songs where I was falling to pieces while I was writing them, but to put [those feelings] into the music was very cathartic and therapeutic. Misery makes really great art.”

WOULD YOU SAY THAT THIS IS GOING TO BE ONE OF THE MOST PERSONAL PAPA ROACH ALBUMS TO DATE?
“Fuck yeah. At times during this process I’ve never felt so broken – musically everything is very visceral and raw. Sometimes it just takes something to shake it up for you to really feel live. I think [this record] has definitely been a pivotal point for me and my growth as a human being. I’ve had to take a long, hard look at myself and it’s coming out in the music.”

AFTER NEARLY 20 YEARS AS A BAND, ARE YOU PAST THE POINT OF FEELING PRESSURE?
“We’ve got a legacy to take care of now – we’ve been around the block – so there is a certain amount or pressure to live up to as a band. We don’t feel like we’ve achieved the pinnacle of what we cn create and there’s always somethig to prove for us. It pushes us.”

Papa Roach’s new album will be released this summer.
